Free Inspirational Stories: A Regular Rudy

Submitted By: William Jones from New Castle, PA, USA

I had a friend in college who played football with me and I find he has an inspirational story. His name was Matthew Jadsawick and he wasn't the greatest football player. As a matter of fact, he was probably one of the worst football players on the team.

We both played the same position so we competed often. Though he was a year older than I was, I managed to start ahead of him during my sophomore year. He never really got to play much besides in mop up duty.

While most kids would have quit, Mat stuck it through all four years. He went to all the lifting sessions and workouts and never gave up.

Despite his work ethic, Mat also had injury problems. He suffered knee injuries just about every year he played. So on top of having to sit the bench, he also had to battle back from injury.

If the story ended there, it would probably not be a very inspirational story; however, the story does have a happy ending.

During the last game of his career, they put Mat on punt block to let him get some playing time in front of his family. We had gone over all that week about how the other team's punt block unit was subpar and the coaches had joked with Mat that he should be able to get one.

Well, coming down to the forth quarter we were behind by a field goal. We stop them on defense and the punt block unit goes out with Mat at the helm. Wouldn't you know it, he tears through the line and blocks the punt. We recover the ball and go on to win the game.

So despite never really getting a chance to play, for one day and one game, Matt got to be a hero and really that's all anybody can ask for.

Free Inspirational Stories: Mom Knows Best

Free Inspirational Stories: Submitted by Karen of Campton

As a parent of a child with Asperger’s (a form of autism), I know much about overcoming adversity.

It's been a battle since day one. We really didn’t know he had a problem until we enrolled him in Kindergarten. Every day he would go to school screaming and crying. The teacher didn’t know what to do with him so she let him do whatever he wanted.

The first years of his school career were very frustrating. He would throw shoes at the other kids. They learned very quickly that they could blame him for anything they wanted and the teacher would believe them.

We began asking questions about what might be wrong with him. A friend recommended a psychiatrist who was supposed to be great for kids with his problems. Before long he had our son on medication for ADHD and Prozac.

Our child started pulling out his hair due to the medication. He had OCD and the medication was making him worse. Before he came off the medication he had pulled out his eyelashes and eyebrows. We were horrified.

I contacted a group who deals with autism in our area. They recommended another physician for our son. The first visit with his new doctor was an eye opening experience. He immediately took him off the medications he didn’t need and called his school. My son had an advocate that knew what he was talking about.

Teachers who would normally send him out of the room when he got upset had to figure out ways to teach him as well. His doctor was there for us when we needed him the most. My son gradually improved under his care.

Today, he is a healthy little boy who, for the most part, is normal. There are instances when he has problems, but not very often. He is completely off medication and is making new friends each day.

My little man is going to be a black belt in Karate that is his dream. He would have never taken part in this type of activity before. We have been through so much. I have my little boy back because I found a doctor who really cared.

Free Inspirational Stories: Problems are opportunities

Submitted by Sujeet Panda from Chennai, India

Adversities and problems are not really opportunities. I belong to a middle class family and we generally depend upon jobs to get out earnings. Then one day, my uncle suddenly lost his job, because that company was not running well in the year 1995.

He had four children all under the age of ten. He was really upset, because of what losing his job would mean to his family. However, his ten year old son had faith in him. He learned from his Father's example. He studied hard and earned a scholarship from the Government. His father no longer had the burden of worrying about paying for his school. It was taken care of.

While in school my cousin started doing part time jobs along with his studies. By the time my uncle had sold almost all his belongings. My cousin was earning a nice income. However, he did not spend his money lavishly. Instead, he used much of it to support my Uncle. Gradually, my cousin earned his degree and started looking for permanent work.

In the meantime, he prepared for the IAS exam which fetches the highest paying job in India. Everybody was laughing at him. But he didn't stop there. He continued part-time work to help support his family.

Unfortunately, my cousin failed the first time he took the IAS exam. However, he didn't give up. The second time, he passed.

With hard work and effort, my cousin achieved his goal. Now he is an administrative office.

What a great lesson for me. Never again can I view problems and adversity from a negative point of view. I see there is plenty of opportunities if one is willing to seek them out. More importantly, if you focus and work hard, you can really achieve what you set out to do. You have to keep hope and faith that you can do it. Everyday my cousin serves as a reminder and positive example for me.
